Edward Tiong is a Partner in Litigation & Dispute Resolution. His main areas of practice are in civil and commercial litigation, construction and engineering disputes, property disputes and insolvency disputes.

Matters of significance that Edward has been involved in include the following:

 

represented a statutory board in arbitration proceedings over a dispute relating to construction claims, including issues of wrongful termination, extension of time and delays;

represented an international developer against a criminal charge by the Ministry of Manpower, under the Factories Act, for a fatal accident during the construction of a major condominium project;

represented a raw material producer in an international arbitration over a dispute concerning a US$40 million agreement to build a plant in Indonesia;

represented a major international bank in a matter concerning cross-border transactions with allegations of fraud and misappropriation of funds;

represented a public listed company against former directors in a matter before the Court of Appeal on issues concerning breaches of employment contracts, fiduciary duties, and confidentiality and non-competition agreements;

represented a local company in an appeal before the Land Acquisition Appeals Board for a claim of S$120 million;

represented several banks for the recovery of funds from various Indonesian companies and other prominent individuals;

advised a statutory board on issues pertaining to the construction of underground tunnels, involving concurrent delay, extension of time and liquidated damages;

successfully defended a Swiss Bank against a claim from an Indonesian Petroleum Company on allegations of fraud, conspiracy, breach of trust and breach of contract;

represented an architect against allegations of breach of duty. Action successfully removed from court system with no further action currently contemplated;

represented a major American bank in a matter concerning cross-border transactions with allegations of fraud and misappropriation of funds, including investigative work and taking of statements from South African nationals; and

represented a local firm in an Anton Pillar exercise against an ex-employee of the firm for breach of employment contract.

 

Edward has also represented several statutory boards, multi-national corporations and property management companies in successful claims.

Edward was seconded to Linklaters in London in 2002. He joined the Litigation and Dispute Resolution department and the Construction department. The significant cases during his secondment are as follow:

 

assisted in a major compliance exercise for a joint venture vehicle between two major retailers in England over issues raised by the Office of Fair Trading, involving several roomfuls of documents from both retailers;

advised an aeronautical firm on a multi-jurisdictional contract over potential liabilities relating to the supply of aircraft engines worth several hundred million Euros; and

advised an Energy Trading Company on various contractual disputes arising from the supply of gas and power.

 

Edward has also given several seminars on Construction Law and Property Law to various organisations.

Edward graduated from the University of Hull with an LLB (Hons) degree. He joined Allen & Gledhill after his call to the Singapore Bar in 1998.
