Corina Song is a Partner and a member of the Maritime & Aviation and Insurance practice groups. Her practice includes all areas of litigious shipping and admiralty matters, as well as both contentious and non-contentious aspects of insurance.

Some of the notable matters which Corina has worked on include:

 

“NAGASAKI SPIRIT” - where she acted for the salvor who challenged the shipyard’s claim for expenses of about S$1 million to be ranked as Sheriff’s expenses, ahead of all other claimants;

“DWIMA 1” - where she acted for the shipyard in one of the few reported cases which deals with the enforcement of a possessory lien by way of an in rem action;

Splosna Plovba International v. AOL - acted for a shipowner in resisting the charterer’s application for a stay pursuant to the IAA, on condition that security be provided;

“BERKUT” - which determined that the value of a ship, for the purposes of security, to be the open market value of the vessel and not the forced sale value;

“SEA NIMROD” - which concerned the quantification of security to be furnished in relation to a charterers’ claim under a Barecon 89 bareboat charter;

“UNION STAR 88” - where she acted for cargo interests who suffered a total loss when the vessel ground in Vietnam, a claim involving the grounding of a vessel in Vietnam, which led to a total loss of the cargoes on board;

acted in a complex oppression action involving a dozen suits brought by and/or against the minority shareholders/directors of a holding company involved in the shipping and timber business;

acted for an insurance company in defending a claim based on material non-disclosure and also successfully resisted the claimant’s application to the Court of Appeal for leave to appeal to the Singapore court against the Tribunal’s award;

acted for numerous creditors in the Armada Shipping scheme of arrangement;

acting for a shipping company, undergoing restructuring, in defending multiple claims in the Singapore court in excess of US$80 million and also involved in co-ordinating multiple actions brought against the company in various jurisdictions;

CATUR SAMUDRA” which is the first local reported decision where the Singapore Court considered whether a claim arising under a guarantee of charterparty obligations attracted admiralty jurisdiction; and

Post-Surgical Complications Policy – acted for Parkway hospitals in its collaboration with OAC, to develop and offer Singapore’s first post-surgical care insurance policy.

Corina obtained an LLB (Hons) degree from the University of Hull in 1988 and an LLM from the University of London in 1992. She was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in January 1992. She was called to the Singapore Bar in 1993. She joined Allen & Gledhill in 1997 and became a Partner in 2000.
